, but the new promise is, he won't raise anyone's income taxes who earns less than 250,000 next year. so, obama himself in his campaign speeches says, if i get reelected president, 2014, katie bar the door, there is no protection for anybody. so the tax code-- >> you're saying attack on the tax issue, that's what you say mitt romney can, must and should do. >> and spending and just the overall spend, tax, policy of this administration which would only get worse in a second term. stuart: all right. governor norquist, always a pleasure, thanks for joining us, sir. >> good to be with you. stuart: are we headed into recession? it's a big question right now. some say, yes, we are. well, there is some evidence. 1.3% gdp growth in the second quarter, that's minuscule. the unemployment rate over 8% and it's been there for, well, almost four years. and we're just three days away from next jobs report which could be a bad one. and joining us is a senior economist at rbs. i want you to tell me, are we no, no, let me rephrase that. i want you to tell me i'm absolutely wrong, totally wrong if i say there's

voted for barack obama. >>> he was new. he had new ideas. >>> i think that now we've given obama a fair chance. and i don't think he's able to do what we need him to do. >>> the president is doing a mediocre job, and the economy in my opinion is still the same as it was four years ago. >>> what's effective about that is that what governor romney has to do is persuade people who voted for president obama that they shouldn't vote for him again. if the attack is strong on his competence or strong on some facet of his leadership, the danger is people hunker down and defend their original vote. this situates the voter where the voter is right now, it says, "we license you to reject the incumbent." it's an ad that says, "let's make this a referendum. >> what about the pro-obama ad? what's the most effective ad they've run that is believable? >> i think the most effective ad that they have is on the air right now. it's capturing a small segment of the statement that governor romney made behind closed doors, not realized he was being taped, about the 47%. and it puts pictures of people who fall

intact and the number of new gun laws enacted by the obama administration adds up to exactly zero. finally, the prediction about how the president would respond to captured terrorists. quote, terrorists captured overseas are given full trials in the u.s. court system, and they have to be allowed access to a number of government secrets to prepare their defense. well, actually government secrets to prepare a defense, i don't think so. here is a secret for you, the top terrorist, osama bin laden, is dead. >>> no doubt if the president wins re-election those and other far right scenarios will get a new luster for the second term. because fantasy leads to more fantasy. >>> up next, the big debate last night between elizabeth warren and scott brown. well, who won that one? that was a top of the card. who lost and what does it mean for the battle sfor the senate? you're watching "hardball," the place for politics. if we want to improve our schools... ...what should we invest in? maybe new buildings? what about updated equipment? they can help, but recent research shows... ...nothing tra

are rank and file republicans. the democrats are going great guns. obama registered 250,000 new voters in north carolina. everybody said north carolina won't really be competitive this time. i thought that along with indiana, it was probably those two states he was most likely to lose yet he's holding up in the polls. if he carries it, it's probably going to be that registration edge from the massive registration he's doing and now the hearing from people who live in colorado don't believe the polls. it's a lot closer than it seems. colorado is going to be really hard fought. maybe mitt romney ha a hard time in the primaries in 2012. he did great in 2008. people will remember him. half of what the colorado party has spent on this election it's spent on that voter registration contract with this bogus company that's now been fired and can do no work in the last home stretch of the campaign. there's a basic competence issue in terms of what it means to run a party here. i feel like the rank and file voters must be -- but they must be enraged. >> you have seen some real money management i

live in washington. only one day to go before mitt romney faces off against president obama in denver and our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows voters across the nation are placing more importance on these debates than the last time a sitting president ran and was challenged. joining me chris cizilla, managing editor of post politics.com and nbc political editor mark murray. mark, first to you, go through the numbers on the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. others have shown tightening of the race. when you asked voters whether they are looking to these debates more than last time did. >> people are paying attention. four in ten saying this is going to matter, be important to their vote, although worth noting about six in ten of the people said this wasn't going to be all that important. when you dig inside the numbers it shows that key parts of president obama's coalition african-americans, latinos, are actually putting a high importance on the debates which actually kind of shows the challenge that mitt romney has to actually get his side as enthusiastic about it.
